 What OnVu™ is

Food Safety and Quality Jamaica are proud to present OnVu™ the label that makes freshness visible and that consumers now have a tool that assist them in selecting and consuming the freshest goods. OnVu™ is a novel time-temperature indicator (TTI) that has been jointly developed by Ciba (now part of BASF) and FreshPoint. Applied as a stand-alone label, it can potentially also be printed directly onto the packaging.
What OnVu™ is
Thelabel that makes freshness visible

This user-friendly indicator allows producers, retailers and consumers to monitor the chill chain from the point of packaging to consumption, thereby ensuring the freshness of the food products it is applied on. Temperature abuse of food by producers, retailers and consumers is known to be the major cause of spoilage and illness associated with it.

The currently utilized use-by date printed on a package does not reflect any of these temperature infringements during transit and storage. OnVu™ shows producers, retailers and consumers at a glance whether the goods have been correctly supplied and stored by using an easy-to-read color-coded system.

OnVu™ is suitable for all chilled perishable foods and beverages, including meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, fresh produce, juices and ready-to-eat/convenience meals.

Where to get?

OnVu™ TTIs will be available to food producers and retailers in Europe, Japan / Korea, United States and now also in Jamaica and the Caribbean. As the logo is based on pictograms rather than language, the label information will be universally distributed.

The first format to appear on the market will be a roll of labels, wound up so that one label is showing and the rest are faced down, ready to be activated. The roll of labels will then be fed through a labelling machine, which is equipped with a special application head and can also apply a UV-Filter

The first generation TTI is for meat, fish and diary products. Additional TTIs suitable for other fresh food products and other applications are currently under development.

The cooperation with Bizerba in the meat industry supports a one-stop-shop purchasing of the whole OnVu™ technology including label printing and fully automated application on the package with activation and application of the UV filter to the label. Bizerba’s know how also supports the creation of system labels with coding of all relevant tracing data of the chill chain.

OnVu™ can be purchased via the existing Ciba (now part of BASF) sales organizations.
